I've encountered plenty people with a 'hero complex' or a 'saint complex' - "but I'm a NICE person" where their actions don't align with their words and who have been all of these types in ONE person.

~Recognising Manipulative Behaviour in Helping Professions:~
The majority of people working in caring professions—such as charities, healthcare, counselling, and social services—are compassionate and genuinely want to help others. However, as with any profession, these spaces can also attract individuals who seek validation, control, or power under the guise of altruism.
Some people with a "hero complex" or "saviour mentality" may struggle with setting boundaries, crave recognition, or become defensive when their actions are questioned. In more extreme cases, they may manipulate others, refuse to acknowledge the harm they cause, or use their position to control narratives and silence dissent.
Signs of Manipulative Behaviour:
-Prioritising their own ego over genuinely helping others.
-Expecting something in return for their assistance.
-Struggling to take accountability for mistakes.
-Using social influence to isolate or discredit those who challenge them.
-Controlling narratives to protect their reputation rather than addressing issues honestly.
While harmful individuals exist in every profession, it is important to recognise red flags rather than assume all caring professionals have bad intentions. Education, awareness, and trusting your instincts can help you distinguish genuine support from manipulation.
If you ever feel unheard, dismissed, or pressured in these environments, seek advice from trusted sources or external advocacy groups. Safe spaces should truly be safe for everyone.
