@osmanayshea | Ayshea Osman | Mike Davies  Book Review: What He Couldn’t Take by Ayshea Osman — 8/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What He Couldn’t Take by Ayshea Osman is a raw, reflective and deeply personal memoir about survival, the patterns that shape us, and the long, complicated process of reclaiming yourself after domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is a cause very close to my heart, and as a survivor myself, I read this book with a level of understanding that went beyond simply reviewing the words on the page. There are parts of Ayshea’s story that will feel painfully familiar to people who have lived through controlling, frightening or damaging relationships: the gradual erosion of boundaries, the instinct to keep the peace, the hope that love and patience might somehow be enough, and the painful realisation that surviving can sometimes mean having to choose yourself. What gives this memoir strength is the way Ayshea looks beyond a single relationship and reflects on the patterns that began...

Abusive relationship advice (from lived experience):

Abusive relationship advice (from lived experience): Trauma bonding can feel like an addiction — because in many ways, it functions like one. The hot-and-cold cycles of affection and withdrawal create intense emotional highs and lows that condition your nervous system. Over time, that pattern starts to feel familiar, and humans are naturally drawn to what feels familiar, even when it’s harmful. This is what makes the bond so strong. It isn’t love — it’s emotional conditioning. The manipulation of emotions keeps you chasing relief, reassurance, and connection, while slowly eroding your sense of safety and self. Understanding this isn’t about blame. It’s about clarity — and clarity is how the spell starts to break. But the moment you break it, the chains fall away — and you finally see the truth: the version of them you were clinging to was a fantasy, not reality. You are worthy of real love, safety, and consistency. You cannot find someone who will truly cherish or worship you while you...

Completing the Work That Found Me:

Completing the Work That Found Me: I’m proud to share that I’ve just finished and submitted my final unit for my Level 2 qualification in Understanding Domestic Abuse. This course was not easy. It was emotionally demanding, particularly because of my own lived experiences. But it was also necessary. Learning in this area matters deeply to me — not just academically, but ethically — because education is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent harm, support survivors, and challenge systems that fail people. As the Director of a newly formed CIC, I intend to use this knowledge practically and responsibly. Through workshops, community sessions, and collaborative projects, I will be incorporating domestic abuse awareness and education alongside the work I already do in mental health and disability advocacy. While Let’s Talk North East CIC has a strong focus on mental health support, I am proud to now also offer: • disability awareness and understanding • domestic abuse awareness a...
