Not Dead Yet

by Sarah Wingfield Author,

Independent Disability Advocate.

Not dead yet —

But I’ve wanted to die.

Wished for comas.

Whispered quiet goodbyes.

I'm disabled, you see.

In agony. Constantly.

Pain — chronically.

But my disability

You can’t see.

It's invisible to the naked eye,

Hidden deep within me.

Don’t mistake me.

Don’t forsake me.

Don’t throw me away.

Don’t silence me.

I'm an advocate.

A warrior.

A mother.

A conjurer —

Who actions positive change.

Don’t abandon me.

Don’t quit on me —

Especially on the days

I seem estranged.

Not dead yet —

Just trying to survive.

Trying to change the world.

Trying to thrive.

Not dead yet —

But told I should have been.

A burden on society —

The internal screams.

I was hidden away.

Bedridden decay.

Abandoned by the system.

But I fought my way

Out of there.

Not dead yet —

But could’ve been convinced to be.

I still have days

I consider being...

Not dead yet —

Though my existence is penalised.

Still — I’m grateful.

Life still offers.

And I —

I have fight left in me.

The world needs to change.

And it won’t change willingly.

It needs more people like me —

Who speak openly.

Who build safe spaces.

Who advocate freely.

Not dead yet.

But I could have been.

About the online protest:

What brings you joy in life? On Monday 9th June from 6pm to 8 pm join DPAC and Not Dead Yet UK online creative protest against the assisted dying bill. Make, craft, write, paint, knit or just bring along a photo or item and show your MP and the public that we're #NotDeadYet

We only have a few weeks left to convince MPs to vote against the bill. The second report stage is Friday 13th June and we believe the final vote will be Friday 20th June. We will also be organising protests and demos for these dates with Not Dead Yet UK .

There are no protections to protect Disabled people in the bill and we are very concerned about the risks around coercion and consent. The government has said that cuts to the NHS, palliative care and disability benefits will be used to pay for the bill.

Join us and share your loves, interests, passions and people who matter to you. You could write a song, a poem, draw a picture, create a collage - whatever works for you!

We will be asking everyone to take a photo or screenshot of their work (you don't have to be in the picture unless you want to be) and will be creating an online gallery to share with MPs.

We will split the first hour into groups of people wanting to work quietly on their piece with music in the background and those that want to share what brings them joy. In the second half we will come together, and people will share what they've created if they feel comfortable doing so.

If you can't make it online, tweet your MP and to the public. We need as many MPs as possible to vote against the bill.

The online protest will be recorded and shared afterwards on social media, YouTube and with MPs. Captions and BSL will be available. Register today and we will send a link to you on the day.

We also encourage everyone who wants to create something to start now and finish at the event. This will be a space to share what you enjoy about life. This protest is not a place to argue or debate with each other. It’s about giving us a creative space to share our joys and change the narrative of the assisted dying bill.

Stop the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life Bill) and register here. Please contact us if you would like to share anything with us ahead of time or would like to present what you create on the day.
