Newton News/Newton Press, representation matters:
To my friends who were waiting to see my Disability Awareness Speech photos with The Rotary Newton Aycliffe in the Newton News — I’m sorry to say I haven’t been printed again. Newton Press has failed to represent myself, my work, and my community.
I had hoped this would be a chance to build bridges, to move past how poorly I’ve been treated in the past, and to ensure that our disabled community has a fair voice. I was even willing to repair those bridges and take down my factual review of my mistreatment if the paper had shown a sign of wanting resolution — by being fair, accessible, and inclusive towards myself and our disabled community. Sadly, that hasn’t happened.
Personal biases clearly exist, and it seems they can’t be resolved — you can’t reason with the unreasonable.
I’m sharing this here because I am a Newtonian, because the work I do matters, and because the people I help matter. The speech was a step in the right direction towards greater awareness and understanding of disability, and it deserved to be seen.
This is now the second time I have been excluded from the paper, and it feels like a deliberate choice to ostracise me. But I will not stop. I will continue working with the people and organisations who truly care about Newton Aycliffe, about inclusion, and about community.
I’ll keep using the platforms available to me — films, books, video podcasts, magazines, blogs, vlogs — and continue supporting charities and organisations through my unpaid work and advocacy.
Because whether or not certain voices try to silence me, our disabled community deserves their voices to be heard.
Sending everyone love,
Sarah Wingfield

Alt Text:
The image shows the front page of the Newton News dated Friday 3rd October 2025.
The masthead at the top is in bold yellow text: “Newton News” with the subtitle: Incorporating The Newtonian - Newton Aycliffe’s Free Community Newspaper, published on the first and third Friday of each month. Contact details for editorial and advertising are listed below.
The main headline across the page is:
“Steel Signing Marks Major Milestone at Greenfield Academy”
⚠️Notably, there is no coverage at all of The Rotary Newton Aycliffe or the Disability Awareness Speech, despite these being significant community events. Coverage of other Rotary guests has been included in the paper previously.⚠️
The article covers the construction progress of a new state-of-the-art education hub in Newton Aycliffe, including details about Esh Construction, Durham County Council, local dignitaries, energy efficiency features, and the expected completion in Autumn 2026. There is a large aerial photo of the construction site at the top left and a smaller photo of officials in high-visibility jackets at the bottom right.
To the right of the front page is another story titled:
“Community Award for Brenda”
This reports on Brenda Millington receiving the Great Aycliffe Town Council’s Community Recognition Award for her outstanding voluntary work, particularly her support with The Welcome Café at St. Clare’s Church and her efforts to reduce isolation, improve mental health, and help vulnerable residents.
At the bottom of the page are adverts/logos for Whitehouse Funeral Service, Alan Strickland MP, McDonald’s, Newton Press, Aycliffe Business Park, and Aycliffe Radio.
The footer states:
“Next Edition: Friday 17th October.”
